Software for inventory optimization is most often used to crank out the analytical results you need to run your day-to-day business, such as Reorder Points (also known as Mins) and Order Quantities. This specialized software helps you find the sweet spot that balances inventory costs against item availability during routine operations. Inventory optimization software can also be used to perform “what-if” analyses on scenarios that describe changes from your current operating environment. What-if analysis (also called “sensitivity analysis”) lets you elevate your thinking from the tactical to the strategic. It helps you imagine how you ...

Hello and welcome to the D365UG-BC-NAVUG Board Blog for November/December 2019 (Our next meeting will be in January).  We had the first of nine meetings for our new 2020 advisory board.  Since user group members always wonder about the purpose of the board, I thought it would be a good idea to kick off this new blog after each advisory board meeting. The board is an advisory committee to Dynamic Communities.  Dynamic Communities runs the D365 User Group for Business Central (BC) and Dynamics NAV and the advisory board represents the members of the user group community.  The advisory board is comprised of nine NAV/BC user members, two Microsoft Partner members, ...

We frequently encounter confusion about the process of setting safety stock levels. This blog hopes to clarify the issue. Safety stock is a critical component in any system of inventory management. Indeed, some  inventory software  treats safety stock as the key decision variable in the quest to balance inventory cost against item availability. Unfortunately, that approach is not the best way to strike the balance. First, realize that safety stock is part of a general equation: Inventory Target = Average Lead Time Demand + Safety Stock. Average Lead Time Demand is defined as the average units demanded multiplied ...

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central / NAV with a “Flare”: Cumulative Updates, Part 1 - What you Need to Know Author: Faithie Robertson, reprinted from archerpoint.com Confession: I was a pre-teen in the bellbottom-jean era. Now, don’t you dare look that up to see how old I am!    In a short period of time, jeans went from fairly straight legged to big, wide openings at the bottom that honestly, I could probably have fit my then-tiny waist into! But there was no way my frugal grandmother or parents were going to go out and buy us all brand-new jeans and toss the old. You don’t throw out something you can use! Instead, my grandmother would split the ...

As chair for the D365 Business Central User Group (aka BCUG)|NAVUG Board of Advisors, I have frequently heard the questions, “What does the board do?” and “What is the purpose of the Advisory Board?”  As I enter my second term as Advisory Board Chairperson, I hope to make the board members and what we do more visible to the BCUG|NAVUG community. The BCUG|NAVUG board is a team of 15 people:  Nine BC or NAV users, one Microsoft MVP, two associates from BC|NAV VARs, one associate from a BC|NAV ISV, one representative from Microsoft, and the General Manager or Program Manager of BCUG|NAVUG who is employed by Dynamic Communities. We are often described as “the ...

The whole idea of a user group is fundamentally simple: Find people who do what you do and share knowledge to better your workday. Thank you for building an incredible commonwealth of shared Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV experience and connections. Our Story The value of our user group communities is based on the official founding in 2004, when a small group of CIOs discovered great benefit in sharing knowledge and experiences about their ongoing system and business strategies. Over the last 15 years, together we’ve grown to 10+ user group communities including the PowerApps User Group in 2018. What’s Next We are excited ...

Summary Setting a target  service level or fill rate  is a strategic decision about inventory risk management. Choosing service levels can be difficult. Relevant factors include current service levels, replenishment lead times, cost constraints, the pain inflicted by shortages on you and your customers, and your competitive position. Target setting is often best approached as a collaboration among operations, sales and finance. Inventory optimization software is an essential tool in the process. Service Level Choices Service level is the probability that no shortages occur between when you order more stock and when it arrives on the ...

We have a "Bank Account" set up called undeposited funds and our credit card transactions are posting to this account.  We then post the full bank deposit that hits the bank offsetting to this account.  Our thought was that we could clear the transactions daily.  The individual credit card transactions and the bank deposit would zero out when reconciled daily or unmatched entries would remain for future reconciliation.  My question is when I do a bank account reconciliation and check all of the GL entries which total zero,  how do I get a report showing those transactions that are clearing?  The report only displays Bank account transactions, it does not show ...

Stop buying everything, from paper clips to software?   No. You should get a little bit smart about how you are going to ride it out.  Even in normal times, good inventory hygiene suggests that you continuously update your inventory control parameters : reorder points, order quantities, safety stocks, mins, maxes, lead times. Beyond that, you should be updating your inventory strategies, such as adjusting the target service levels or fill rates for every item you hold. That’s the “should.” But in normal times, it’s easy enough to let those adjustments slide and focus on other things. Then, when the first whiff of recession is in the air, ...
