Once upon a time, I worked in accounting…   Thirty years later, I was promoted to  IT Coordinator at the company I currently work for in 2013 and part of this new role was taking care of our ERP, Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 and while I was excited about this new opportunity and experience, my first thoughts were, where do you go to college for an education in NAV Administration?   The immediate answer to my question was "nowhere" and there I was feeling like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, alone on a disserted island and this went on until the spring of 2014 when I was introduced to NAVUG by a potential VARS we were interviewing. We sat down at my desk and ...

As an in-house developer, I always make sure we have 3 databases total: LIVE, TEST and DEV. I do my development in DEV, move the changes over to TEST so Accounting can give their stamp of approval, and finally I move it all to LIVE. I only use 1 SQL server, although it'd be preferable to have 3 separate servers if you can squeeze it. When I'm ready to refresh the TEST or DEV environments, I take the following steps: 1. Backup the NAV Objs in (TEST/DEV) from the Object Designer. I always put the company and database in the name, e.g. BPL All TEST Objs 2017-11-10.fob , and then I compress with 7zip (most efficient compression tool IMHO). I keep these object ...

As a purchaser life can get pretty repetitive and boring just staring at reports all day and in less than two weeks that is all going to change.   On November 20 th we begin our training with Lanham for Demand Planning (AFP).   It has been a long road, with many headaches, to get here.   When I started in our purchasing department almost a year and a half ago I believed that all you did was order when someone said to.   Little did I know how much work really went it ordering.   In my first week I learned about SKU (Stock Keeping Units) and how we set\use them.   By week two I was beginning to create purchase orders using the suggestions of ...

This is a battle I've been fighting since I started working for my present company, and I don't know how prevalent it is, but I thought it worth sharing. Someone just asked me what our yearly maintenance fee is for NAV, so I went to the Microsoft vendor ledger, and looked for the bigger $$ value invoices. I navigated on them, but there was no posted purchase invoice because the invoice had been entered into a purchase journal with a description of:   MICROSOFT ONLINE SVC 4/25   Item a) can be determined by looking at the vendor no., and item b) is more useful but still vague, but there’s nothing to navigate to, to get additional detail. ...

This is something I've had to think about, and is not something I'd do every time. Life isn't black and white, and neither are requirements. In my present case, I'm recommending a Re-implementation over an Upgrade. My reasoning follows. So, presently we're at NAV 2013 R2, so we're over the Classic-Cliento-To-RTC upgrade issues. That would mean upgrade wouldn't be as bad, were that not the case. We also have a horrible amount of bad data. You know what they say, "garbage in, garbage out." There are parts of NAV that are not being used, and hence, creating an ever-increasing heap of garbage. This is the biggest reason I'm recommending a re-implementation over ...
