Elizabeth - There are several very solid products that NAV and BC Users rely on for managing their sales and use tax.

Wolters Kluwer is a sponsor partner for NAVUG.  Chris Kane works out of their DFW office.  His email is

You could also look at Avatax from Avalara.  Avalara has had integrations in place for NAV for years.

Good luck!  Sales and Use Tax automation is a significant project but the paybacks in terms of compliance and peace of mind are fantastic.

Hi!  I'm not going to recommend a specific product because we still haven't worked out the kinks in the one we implemented in December (not the same company mentioned above), but I would recommend making sure that you get a clear answer on how you will calculate sales tax in different places if that is needed.  For example, if you have a point of sale system or a website or multiple websites, you will want to make sure that all of them are able to calculate tax using the same "tax engine" of sorts.  Check to make sure that the list of states with Nexus is stored in a central place that can be accessed by all of your systems (likely via API or plug-in).  You also need to ask whether product tax codes will be stored in NAV or in the third party system.  If they are stored in the third party system, how are they added/updated?  If stored in NAV, will they be accessible to other websites or systems that need to calculate tax, or if not, can you send them from NAV?  When we began our implementation, we were told that a plug-in for our e-commerce site was "almost complete."  We ended up using a different sales tax calculator on our website because the company that we used for our NAV calculations didn't complete that plug-in for over a year, which has caused some issues.  For whatever provider you look at, ask for some references that do business in the same way you do (online, phone, retail, etc) to get an idea of what to expect.

    Best of luck!
