I'm new to assembly orders.  I read how to create an ASM from a sales order but that created a reservation.  The trouble I'm having now is posting daily production for this.  My sales order is set up for 10,000 pcs due by 10/7/21.  When I try to enter the daily production I get an error message about it being wrong qty.  I've tried looking up in Microsoft Docs but I don't see anything about posting of assemblies - just how to sell or create.
Is there a way to create an assembly from the sales order without a reservation?
How do you post with reservations?
I was able to create a manual order and post that way.  Deleted my line off my sales order and re-entered it.
    Any guidance would be helpful.
    Thanks!

An "Assemble-To-Order" policy will create the reservation automatically as the Assembly Order is directly tied to the Sales Order.  In this case your processing actually happens on the Sales Order.

An "Assemble-To-Stock" policy has the ability to create stand-alone Assembly Orders, with or without reservations.  The reservation will depend on the settings on the Planning Tab of the Assembled Items.  In this case your processing happens on the Assembly Order, and there would be a separate process to consume the Output of the AO.

When you say "enter daily production" are you trying to Post Output on the Assembly Order?  If it is Assemble-to-Order, your Output is recorded using the Quantity to Ship field on the Sales Order.  If you are in "Assemble-To-Stock", you should be able to Output directly on the Assembly Order.

Yes.  I have a Sales order for 10,000 units due 10/7/21.  The floor will make around 1200 pcs per day.  So if I go to the Sales order and post the output on the Qty to Ship for today - is there some place I enter "post".  I'm not shipping out on a daily basis.  I will ship when the order is completed.  How would tomorrow's qty be entered?  We report everything on a daily basis so this way the floor knows what is left to produce.  Do I need to change the posting date?  I'm used to production orders.

In the scenario you described, your Item should be an "Assemble-to-Stock" policy.  This allows you to post daily Output from the Assembly Order into Inventory.  Your eventual Sales Order shipment will relieve that Inventory.

To ensure your system is making the Assembly Orders you will need to assign a Reorder Policy to the Assembly Item.  This way the Planning Worksheet will pick up the Demand and suggest the Supply.

I'm a big believer in Blank Posting Date defaults, so that Users are forced to enter a Posting Date at the time of actual Posting.  You should be changing your Posting Date with each daily Output Posting.
