Drop ship items and shipping on web orders

We are currently running NAV 2016 and are in the process of implementing SANA ecommerce.  We have a situation that we are wondering what others have done.  We are brainstorming internally before enlisting our vendor(s).  Currently when an order is placed via a phone through customer service the rep will let the customer know that the item is a drop ship item and additional shipping charges will apply.  If the customer needs a shipping cost before placing the order the rep will call purchasing who in turn will call vendor to get shipping costs.  Purchasing lets rep know who lets customer know and this is what gets invoiced.  If the customer doesn't require the shipping costs at the time of the order the costs just get applied to the invoice.  Not the best process but it works.  However this process will not work on the web as there will be no dialog.

So here is the situation...On the web a customer can place an order for a drop ship item. The web goes out and rate shops the shipping costs and adds it to the order.  Note however in reality the items get shipped from the vendor location and the 'real' shipping costs comes from our vendor once they have shipped it from their location.  We get an invoice from them and we adjust the invoice internally.

Long story short how do organizations charge shipping at the time of the web order when the shipping is going to be done from the vendor's location and the shipping cost is not known until this happens?   We are open to any and all thoughts and solutions.

Thanks in advance for any insight on this

We would usually use Item Charges for that:

However if you want to pass it up to the sales side then that part is harder to do, because it would already be shipped and invoiced.

    Thanks Sam,

Yes we would need to have the shipping cost passed to the sales order because it would need to be on the web order.   Especially if the customer was using a credit card and a pre-auth is done.

What we did was add a flag on the item that it was drop ship only, then  on SANA the item had a page built but wasn't order-able.  The verbiage of "Call to place and order " along with the phone number was there instead. This allowed us to get the shipping quotes and everything for the customer. We had brain stormed some other options like an inquire about this item button that sent an email to our CSR, we had talked about negotiating fixed rate shipping for drop shipments from vendors, none of those worked out well for the sales goals and control they wanted over the items.

    Thanks Mathew,

What you do might be a option for us.  I'm assuming that you can't get the shipping quotes from the vendors while you have the customer on the phone which means you call them back.   Which also means the customer can't complete the order all at once is that correct?

The option of ' fixed rate shipping' is interesting and I might dig into that a little deeper.  Like you however we would have some wows as we have a lot of DS items and setting up and managing shipping costs for them would seem to be resource intensive.

    Hello Tim,

This is a common issue with the drop shipping model.

    Some possible solutions:
    • Have a pre negotiated cost setup with vendor, if possible.
    • Setup a flat rate shipping cost after analyzing multiple shipping costs that have come from a variety of vendors
    • Confirm if SANA can handle multiple origin locations to calculate shipping costs. Something like this (this is for Shopify customers) Better Shipping - Ecommerce Plugins for Online Stores - Shopify App Store. Then send the correct shipping costs to NAV
    Cheers,
