WIP Physical Inventory

    Hi All

Is there anyway in BC to produce physical inventory as part of a routing. For example, if I'm building something that 3 steps

Operation 1 takes raw materials A, B and C and produces Part X
Operation 2 takes Part X plus materials D and E and produces Part Y
Operation 3 takes part Y, performs a process and produces Part Z

Right now, posting output of Operations 1 and 2 consumes the raw materials A,B,C and D,E respectively, but do not produce any WIP physical inventory for Parts X and Y.

Can this be done in BC (2020) and if so how would the manufacturing setup need to be changed?

    Thanks

    Mark

    Mark,

Happy New Year. Question - Is Part X and Y real Items and are they individual Released Production Orders with consumption and output? I am guessing not since the above example sounds more like a routing flow and what is being manufactured along the way. If they are not real Items and you want to see the Finished X and Y, you will need them to be actual Items and produce the Output. They will be consumed within the each Operation (i.e. X consumed in Part Y and Part Y consumed in Part Z).

If you are not going to create the X and Y the WIP GL Account will reflect any consumption postings and will reconcile to those Released Production Orders still not 100% finished. You can see this off the Statistics Page. The Actual column would equal my postings to WIP (Note: that Adjust Cost would have to be run to make sure all entries have been updated).
I hope I understood your scenario correctly.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Thanks for reply Steven

They are actual items (partially finished).

"If they are not real Items and you want to see the Finished X and Y, you will need them to be actual Items and produce the Output"

I don't see anywhere in BC to assign the partially finished item no being produced.

In other ERP's I've seen two approaches: the system generates automatic item numbers or, in the routing, you can assign the output item no of each operation.

Out production orders have a single line and a routing of 3-6 lines. The users post output journals for each routing lines, but the only item they can select is the final item produced on the job, even if they are on the first routing line of, say 4,

Ideally what we'd like to be able to do is what we do now: post an output journal, selecting a prod order and a machine center, but have that create physical inventory items of a predefined item no (as well as all the existing ledger entries) for that routing line output

Not sure if it's possible and it's just an avenue we're considering

    Thanks

    Mark,

Hello. I will try to explain this based on how I would setup a Bill of Material for an Item that has sub-assembly Items that are in Inventory. In my example, I have a Item called Back Wheel #1200 and within the BOM for the Item I have a sub-assembly Item called Back Hub #1250. Below are the BOM Pics. Now the first pic are 2 Released Production Orders generated by my Planning Worksheet that creates the sub-assembly Prod. Order, based on demand. The floor manufacturers Item 1250 and creates Output and inventory and my Back Wheel will consume those 1250 Items. As 1250 is outputted I can pull and consume what is finished into Prod. Order for Item 1200.

Since you want to inventory these X and Y Items, this is the process I would employ for sub-assemblies. I can track them for production and output and consume them within the final Prod. Order for the Z Item as they trickle in.

I hope this gives you some idea but if not, feel free to reach out and I can share my screen and how you the example - steven.chinsky@wipfli.com.
    Thank,
    Steve

    Mark,

Further to Steve's comments, we have tackled this two different ways in the past. Both companies had multi-step production processes with a single raw materials.

    • One routing step per production order. Each time an operation is completed it output as a new item number. This results in "WIP" being a series of related items. This results in a lot of production orders, but is manageable. (base NAV/BC)
    • Multiple routing steps to make the item. With this approach we created a WIP Physical Inventory process since NAV/BC considers everything in WIP as financial and does not track quantities. (modified NAV/BC)
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Andrew

When you say "created a WIP Physical Inventory process", do you mean business process, or are you referring to something in BC?

    Thanks

    Mark,

I am referring to a customization that we built since BC does not have a concept of quantities in WIP Inventory.

    Cheers,
