Packaging Specification Software

    Hello!

I have been tasked by our R&D Department to find a software solution for our packaging specifications. One of the requirements that the team has is that it integrate with NAV. Does anyone have any experience with packaging spec software and integrating it with NAV? Even if it isn't a direct connection with NAV, but some SQL table connection so that the info from NAV can be easily imported to the solution, and vice versa? I am looking forward to any experience people may have had with this type of request.

    Thank you-
    Jill

    Hi Jill,

What version of NAV are you guys using?

Are we talking about enriching a sales order with package information, or what kind of integration is needed?

In general, yo should never use direct SQL, since that will circumvent business logic. Web Services is the way to go.

Thanks, Erik! We are using NAV 2015 but will begin looking into an upgrade for our next fiscal year. We are looking for something that can minimally access the BOM in NAV and make sure that the most current BOM is represented in the software. That way, if there are any changes made to the BOM, it is automatically updated in the software.

    Hi Jill,

TOPS is widely adopted, and the enterprise version is SQL based, which would allow you to design an integration in house. I've seen TOPS used for building packaging, case, mastercase, and pallet specifications, and max cubing ocean containers. I have never implemented it, or worked with a direct integration, but  I am aware that it is out there, and fairly popular for what it is worth.

Thank you Paul! I appreciate the feedback. I will look into TOPS as a potential solution.
