Secondary SN in Item Tracking

Has anyone had experience with tracking a secondary Serial Number in NAV 2016?

We currently record our own SN's in Item Tracking, but we have a customer that wants us to apply their SN to each device (meaning each device will have 2 serial numbers, ours and the customers).  We still need to record our own SN in Item Tracking (for various reasons, including Service Item creation and internal tracking) but we would also need to 'tie' the customer's SN back to our SN (hence, 2 SN's for each record).  We would apply the customer's SN to the devices at the time of shipment preparation (our original SN's are already applied before our initial warehouse receipt).

I'm thinking it could essentially be a "Serial No. 2" field in the Item Tracking & Item Ledger tables, but I'm hoping someone may have found an out-of-the-box solution instead of getting a DEV involved.

I guess another option, without customization, could be to go into the Service Items afterwards (we are setup for Service Items to be created upon shipment) and enter the secondary SN into one of those fields (such as Description 2).  That would just require us to record the pairing of both SN's externally (Excel) during the shipment preparation, then run a script later to match them up and enter the secondary SN in the Service Item card.  Not ideal...

    thanks
    Tim

    Hey Tim

Unfortunately, NAV only supports one Serial number series out of the box. It could either your numbers or your customers, but only one at the time of goods receipt. You should look to see if an ISV has a solution before you approach your VAR. But it's not a solution NAV has.

    Take Care!

    Thanks for the confirmation, Alfredo.
I figured that was the case, just hoping that someone else on here has the same requirement and has found a good solution/workaround.

Have you explored having your customer issue you their serial number before you put the finished good into inventory?  Maybe they provide blocks of 50 or 100 that your firm can use before it becomes a finished good.  Does your SN number series have any significance beyond tracking the item?  Another option would be to create a number series that matches theirs.  If your application internally is just for tracking then it shouldn't make a difference what the actual number is.  This becomes a moot point if your SN is a smart number and you use it for more than tracking.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jason.  Unfortunately, in our case, our SN have a complex structure with encoded fields (MFG ID, Date Code, Module type, etc), so we cannot replace with the customer's SN.

Another option is to utilized the Lot No. Information Card and add a Customer Serial No. or use the Description Field. You could then add a flowfield to the Item Ledger Entries to show the value.

    Hey Tim

Andrew hit on something in regards to the "Lot No. Information Card". It may entail more keystrokes on the user, but you can accommodate both your and the customer's serial numbers. Try it out n your test environment. Nice job Andrew!

I've always recorded this type of information on the Serial No. Information card. It is for information only. You wouldn't ever scan it as a barcode, or see it in reservation entries / item tracking. We had our own serial no., and would record the Manufacturer Serial No. on the card.

I've not used the SN/Lot info cards in the past, so I'll take a look at those.  Thanks!
