    Hi,

Lost with Dimensions in Nav 2017.

Under purchase journal, after selecting document type, account type, amount and etc, all is well upto here but when it comes to Sales Rep (shortcut Dim 1) and Sales Loc (shortcut dim 3), when i select sales rep as value 43, the system auto picks up sales loc with value as 04 after go to a new line and come back to the original line. see the screenshot

When I click on Dimensions from Navigate Group,

It shows me the sales loc is having dimen code value as 04, but also i want to have new value 02 under sales loc, so when i click on help; about this page

It tells me that Dimension Set Entry Table (480), I must search for record number no. 1124.
So after opening up Development Environment, when i run table 480, filter on Dimen Set ID as 1124, shows me this result below

Here in the above screen I want to add a new value for Dim Code "Sales Loc", so l enter a new line as below

But it gives me error message as Dim Set Entry already Exists.
So the question is how to add a new value in Sales Loc where it can show me 04 and 02 simultaneously.

    Regards
    Khan

    Hi Khan,
You cannot assign two values for the same Dimension Code for one record. If you need to assign Sales Loc 02 and 04 both for a record, I suggest you make a new Sales Loc '02and04' and use that value when both are needed.  Do not use symbols in the value field such as '&' as it will cause unwanted reactions with filtering and other functionality.  Underscore and dashes should be okay.

    Hi Crystal,

Thank you for your reply as well as how to make use of Dimensions under 2017.
I am still lost a bit and need some further explanation on Dimension Set Entry Table.

    If I have 2 dimensions for example;

Business Group (values as Office, Home, Intercompany) &
Dept Code (values as IT, Finance, Sales, Warehouse, etc)

    1. How to set up these dimensions under Dimension Set Entry Table, do I have to export out the template, fill in the details in that template and        import it back in 2017.

    2. If I start with Dimension Set Entry No. as 1 for Dimen Code Business Group with value as Office. Do I then need to do the below
Dimension Set Entry No. as 2 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as IT
Dimension Set Entry No. as 3 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as Finance
Dimension Set Entry No. as 4 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as Sales
Dimension Set Entry No. as 5 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as Warehouse

    THEN

Dimension Set Entry No. as 1 for Dimen Code Business Group with value as Home. Do I then need to do the below

Dimension Set Entry No. as 6 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as IT
Dimension Set Entry No. as 7 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as Finance
Dimension Set Entry No. as 8 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as Sales
Dimension Set Entry No. as 9 for Dimen Code Dept Code with value as Warehouse

Something like the above to continue till all the combinations are formed for Dimen Code Business Group and Dept Code under Dimension Set Entry Table?

    Regards
    Khan

    Khan,

I think you need to revisit what you are trying to accomplish here. The Dimension Set table is primarily a back end storage for all used combinations of dimensions in the system. In normal usage of the system you likely won't ever interact with that table as if you enter a new unique combination from the front end the logic will automatically generate a set entry in that table.

If I'm reading the below correctly I think you are just trying to add a dimension value to your Sales Loc dimensions. To do this simply navigate in the system to "Dimensions" and from there to "Dimension Values" and add the new value. Once there you will be able to select the value in those dropdowns and the set ID's will auto-generate as needed to utilize that new value.

    Khan,

As others have replied, don't think about the Dimension Set Entry table at all. You can setup any Dimension Set combination either as a Default (i.e Chart of Accounts, Customer, Vendor, Item, etc..) or during document entry. BC/NAV will create the Dimension Set entry as you are inputting the values. If the combination is found, it will use the previous Dimension Set Entry No.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Steve
