options for secure check printing

We do some electronic ACH files but still print & sign paper checks for the majority of our AP vendors. With our team working mostly remote, including check signers, we are exploring additional (dare I say "more modern"?) check options, such as the following:
    • A dedicated check printer with MICR ink to print for all companies from the same blank check stock
    • Automatic signatures
    • Workflows to allow for pre-approval of check runs before printing (rather than review of checks after printing)

Any suggestions on add-ons or native functionality we haven't explored yet? We are on NAV2017, Finance use only.

    Thanks,

Have you contacted your bank about the services that they offer? We have a client that is using Wells Fargo to print and mail their checks. They handle checks virtually the same as ACH.

We have a client that uses blank check stock with MICR toner and that has worked well for them.

Let us know what you decide to do.

    Hello Tara!

You're not alone on this! We received a wave of these questions from our clients when this all started, so we wrote a blog series that covers all the items to consider and how to use NAV/BC for this: https://getyournewview.com/workingremotely/ .  Hope those articles help!

we use the work flow method.  the only downfall we find is that despite using Zetadocs to attach backup to the invoices and manual cheques these arent present in the payment batch journal so the General Manager still wants to review and sign.

Deluxe Corporation has a few solutions that you can check out.  They can sell you paper checks, eChecks (so cool, you email out checks and huge $ savings) and they also have services to do checks for you.

Randy Rein of Deluxe can explain more.  randy.rein@deluxe.com

One of the best ways to improve both efficiency and controls where checks are still needed is to move to a completely blank check stock. Have your partner or internal developer modify the check report to include all the appropriate bank account information from the card as well as the signatures. If signing the physical check was part of your approval process, consider changing the approval to prior to the check being printed. There is a report, the Vendor pre-Payment Journal, on the payment journal under posting. This will provide the check amount, the invoices and credit memos that are being applied, and the total amount of the check run.
