How to purchase an item flagged as production

Does anyone know of a way to issue a PO for a particular item which is flagged as Production to satisfy MRP?  The issue I am coming across is that Planning Worksheets is telling me to cancel the PO and then create a production order for the item.  The majority of the time the item is produced but sometimes there is the need to go with a co-manufacturer.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Paul,

This happens more than you think. I have taught my customers to change the Replenishment System = Purchase. Create the PO from the planning request. Update, on the Purchase Line, Planning Flexibility = NONE. Change back the Item Replenishment System = Prod. Order. This was the only way to bounce between Purchase and Prod. Order vs. creating separate Items with different Replenishment Systems.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Steve,

Thank you for the reminder on the Planning Flexibility flag.  I always forget about it.
Looks like I am able to just create a PO manually, change the flag to NONE and then everything is good.

    Thanks again!

Paul - I suspect you might have a date issue - is your Purchase Order Expected Receipt Date equal to or less than the Sales line Shipment Date? (assuming you have the item demand coming from a sales order). If your Purchase Order date is equal to or less than the shipment date you should not be getting the results you are seeing in the planning worksheet. You can purchase a Prod. Order item at any time, but the expected receipt date on the Purchase Order is key - if it is beyond the shipment date planning will tell you to create a new Prod. Oder and cancel the Purchase Order or if you wanted the system to suggest moving in the Purchase Order in a Lot-for-Lot setup you would populate the Rescheduling time to include the future Purchase Order which instead of telling you to create a new Prod. Order would suggest a change message on your existing Purchase Order. So in the end it is how planning is setup - which is always an interesting topic.

    John,

It actually had to do with the Planning Flexibility field on the PO.
Once I set it to NONE for that line, then the MRP stopped trying to overwrite the entry.

Paul - What I was trying to point out is that while setting the PO line Planning Flexibility to NONE did work you would not need to do that. All has to do with how the Planning Parameters are setup on the item which can be 'interesting' sometimes. I have not had any customer planning issues when an item is a Prod. Order, and a Purchase Order was created instead with the Planning worksheet.
