Limit Dimension Values based on GL Account

Hello, is there a way to limit dimension values when a certain G/L Account is used in Business Central?

Example, you use the Department dimension with Dimension Values of Admin, Sales, Production, HR, Accounting, IT.... you enter a purchase invoice using the G/L Account for advertising and only want to see Admin and HR from the Dimension Values.

Is there a way to setup using out of box functionality in Business Central?

Nope.  But this would be a nice feature to have!  I would suggest you use the Feedback feature of Business Central to see if this has been submitted as a feature request by other users and if so 'vote' for it.  Or create new request.  Microsoft monitors these and has been adding the most popular posts in the new versions of Business Central.

We provide an add-on called DimensionPath that provides this functionality.  In NAV our add-on restricts the dimension values the user sees as you are requesting.  In Business Central our add-on doesn't limit the list, but it prevents users from selecting an invalid dimension value based on the G/L account (or based on any other dimension value).

What about the use of a dimension combination?  I believe (I have not personally tested) that certain combinations of dimensions can be disallowed.  If this is the case, then create a dimension for the G/L and only allow the option for the dimension values that you would like.  Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOSBDf29AxU  I am in now way related to this company, I just did a YouTube search.  If this doesn't get you home the code may be a good foundation for the customization / extension.  Please share the fix that you implement with the group.  Thanks.

I agree that Dimension Combinations may be a good option, if there is a combination to restrict to. For instance, if you have a Dimension that further splits an advertising account (i.e. print, promo, social media, etc.) and want to ensure that is only used with the Marketing department, a Dimension Combination will prevent a user form posting to a different combination.

If you have accounts that you can restrict to one Department, like the Advertising G\L should only ever use the Marketing department, you can force that behavior by placing the Same Code value on that account.
