Under Development and New BOM's and Routings

    Hi All

Trying to figure out a way to test a new/modified BOM/Routing before release

Right now we have to change to Certified and make a test production order to make sure we get expected materials and capacity. The problem with this is that someone could then use on a live prod order while we're testing. Is there any way to use a New?under Development BOM/Routing? If not, is there a way to figure otu if, say, a qty of 1,000 would prodcue the expeted results and costs?

    Thanks

    Mark

Have you tried Certifying, making the test Production Order and then immediately changing the BOM back to Under Development before testing the order?  Not 100% sure but once the Prod Order is made it might not matter if the BOM is certified anymore while you do your testing.

    Thanks for reply Jason

That would probably work, was just *hoping* there was a way to test without having to certify so there's no chance of someone forgetting to change back t under development. Quite a few people will have access and I'm not confident they will all be as diligent as I would be :-)

Mark -your question has two components.

Totally 'NEW' items with new Boms and Routes you could use Simulated Production Orders to view results. Both the BOM and Route would need to be certified. These works well as Planning will not see the component demand and hours will not be loaded into Work Centers and Machine.

For existing items one option you might consider is creating the new bom or route by copying the certified bom or route under a temporary number testing number – Create the simulated Production Order and change the default BOM or Route to your test on the Production Order (not the item record).- refresh This might work well particularly if your process to evaluate changes takes several days. Once the changes look good you would of course need to update the Live BOM or Route.

If for an existing item you can create a version with a start date way in the future and certify it.  The version will not be used until the date has been reached but you can manually bring that version into your production order (I would use the Simulated Order previously suggested).  Just make there version field visible on the line and when your refresh uncheck "lines" in the Refresh Option page to populate your test BOM and/or Routing.

You can run the Report Detailed Calculation which will show the bill of material and routing as if you did a production order for quantity 1, or you could create a planned or firm planned production order like others have mentioned.

Mark – one more note on this thread. Whenever you create a Planned or Firm Planned Production Order for R&D even if you would future date it to ensure your planning window doesn't pull components for the planning worksheet the component quantities will be in the totals on the item record (quantity on production orders) and when you run any of item availability views the demand will also be in numbers.

We have also experienced with integration to 3rd party warehouse systems that when a production order is created the data is sent to the warehouse system immediately which amplifies isolating the R&D process.

The use of simulated production orders prevents demand data (material and labor hours) from being available to others and is particularly important if the process is play over several days.

We have a separate database for testing. In fact we have 3 databases - BCLIVE, BCUAT, and BCDEV. Our partner uses BCDEV, we test new code and other changes in BCUAT. That leaves our BCLIVE clean. We do have to backup BCLIVE periodically and restore it to the other two databases. However, that is a small price to pay to have safe sandboxes to play in.

Thanks greg, we have 3 too (Dev, Test, Prod). We;re not live yet, but before we go live we will have to Prod to Test and Prod to Dev scripts so we can easily make copies of Prod to Dev, but that does mean a lot of re-entry (after testing) and also runs risk of test not being up to date. We do a lot of custom grows throughout the year, so will be making a lot of BOM;s and Routing's on an ongoing basis. I thin simulated prod orders and version will suffice for the most part. The biggest issue si the materials and the detailed report in the BOM will be a good way for an initial test of qty's
